Big Picture High School

The extraordinary teaching environment created at Big Picture @ Back of the Yards results in successful high school graduates. Would you like to know why? Because of the “one student at a time” approach. Don’t take our word for it. See what other Big Picture students have said.

The Big Picture Difference

Personalized Education
Students are known well by their teachers, mentors and each other. Each student has a personalized Learning Plan that he or she creates with a teacher, parent(s) and mentors from the community.

Teachers as Advisors
Teachers play a role in the education of each student. They advise, teach and guide in developing curriculum projects that are directly related to the students interests.

A Small Learning Community

Personalization can only occur in a small community. Big Picture Schools are commited to maintaining school environmnets that accomodate no more than 120 students.

Learning Through Real Work
Students are involved in internships that serve as the core of their learning. They also take part in community service learning, national or international travel, and many other experiences that involve students working side by side with adults.

Authentic Assessment
Student work is collected in a portfolio for long term assessment. Each quarter, teachers write narrative evaluations of students based on their exhibition of learning, portfolio of work, and other daily examples of learning.
